Visual rehabilitation

Visual rehabilitation is a mode of therapy for children with visual impairments which may result from an injury to the visual pathways or parts of the brain that process visual information from the outside world. The objective is to enhance the client’s quality of life by providing compensatory strategies, assistive technology, or rehabilitative methods to improve vision.

Children with visual problems due to eye muscle weakness such as squint and lazy eye usually encounter difficulties with fixating their gaze and reading.

Children who have visual deficits at the level of the brain may have a partial or total loss of sight, problems with depth perception, planning sequences, and problem-solving.

Children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder commonly have visual impairments that manifest in the form of attention deficits, lack of eye contact, issues with concentration and focus, issues in handwriting and colouring skills, as well as impaired balance and eye-hand and eye-foot coordination skills.

METHODS OF VISUAL REHAB AND PROFESSIONALS INVOLVED:

At Sneh, Physical and occupational therapists work in collaboration with neuro-ophthalmologists, optometrists and neurologists to identify the disorder to provide the best treatment technique for the child.

Compensatory strategies include visual aids and training. These improve function and neuroplasticity by activating neurons. Visual rehabilitation at birth employs using a kit with black and white coloured items. As the child grows older, the kit is updated age appropriately. The child may also be given sensory experiences focusing on the vestibular system, to train the positioning of objects in the environment and improve balance.

Strategies for conditions such as lazy eye can be managed with eye exercises and corrective lenses with or without a prism.

Visual rehabilitation techniques are modified according to the child’s needs so that they can be maximally independent and live a fulfilling life.
