‘Communication is the essence of life’- Janice Light It is often said that a mother knows her baby’s cry and can identify if it’s coming from hunger, pain or any other reason. But the same cannot be said as the child grows up. Words, gestures and expressions come into play as our brain develops and take over the responsibility for communicating our needs and demands. The development of these skills (speech and language) depends on the child’s capacity, their environment and their interaction with the said environment.

Speech therapy is a type of therapy that addresses everything from verbal and non-verbal communication issues to swallowing problems.
The child has issues related to sounds. Some of them are:
Articulation disorders: Difficulty in making sounds / saying words incorrectly.
Fluency disorders: The flow of the speech is affected. For e.g., stuttering.
Resonance or voice disorders: Problems with the pitch, volume or quality of the voice
Where there is a discord between understan - ding and communicating successfully using appropriate words.
Receptive disorders: Understanding and processing of language is affected
Expressive disorders:: Inability to put words together (due to limited vocabulary or limitations in social settings)
Cognitive-communication disorders:Issues with communication skills involving memory, attention, organisation, regulation (give and take of communication is affected)
Disorders related to the way someone eats or drinks.
Problems with respect to chewing and swallowing of food, repetitive coughing or gagging when eating food, and refusing certain foods.
